The Link between Conscientiousness and Water
Water is one of the basic elements necessary to any health routine. Without the conscientious intake of water on a
regular basis, no health routine will be effective long-term, nor will it last long enough to become an ingrained
habit.
Behavioral scientists tell us that repeating the same behavior for thirty or more days in a row makes something a
habit. But it is biologists who tell us that water has the greatest impact on the conscientiousness of our health
routines.

Water flushes toxins out of our system, transports nutrients from our food to where they need to go, and helps move
waste away, meaning that a person who drinks water conscientiously as part of a health regimen that includes a
healthy diet and regular exercise sees greater benefits than a person who turns to sports drinks or soda, and
therefore will stick with it longer and feel better. But it’s not just the active who need to be drinking
water.
Everyone, no matter their age, level of activity, or gender, needs to be drinking water conscientiously to help
each of their body’s organs process correctly. Drinking water can help with skin problems, headaches, backaches,
muscle cramps, dizziness and nausea. It's also, simply, refreshing.
And yet, very few people drink enough water, perhaps because it's hard to be conscientious about it when there are
so many other options easily to hand.
The link between conscientiousness and water has been explored in many facets, but perhaps the most fascinating
is that it has been proven that just focusing on drinking enough water makes one more conscientious in other
areas as well, such as household chores.
As psychologist and business consultant Charles Duhigg explained in The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do,
changing one small area of our routine has far reaching ripple effects that change other areas of our lives as
well.
Following this line of reasoning, and knowing that water is so absolutely essential for our lives, it follows
that one way to encourage more water-drinking is to exploit the link between conscientiousness and water by
going at it in a roundabout way. Focus on becoming more conscientious in a seemingly unrelated area.
Perhaps making your bed every morning will lead to remembering to drink a tall glass of cold water before you
start the day. Or focusing on making sure you drive exactly the speed limit on your way to work will lead to
switching out that mid-morning soft drink for a bottled water instead. There are as many ways to tailor a plan
to make more conscientious decisions as there are people who read this, but one thing is for certain. The link
between conscientiousness and water consumption is clear as, well, water.
Since water is one of the basic elements necessary for the health of every human being, and conscientiousness
is part of how we get along together as a global society, the link between conscientiousness and water will
more than likely continue to be explored in every conceivable way, but what it all boils down to is that a cool
drink is good for the body, mind, soul, and earth.
